B and I still have dinner together most nights. It’s a luxury I’m not immune to and it’s really nice to have that half an hour together at the end of every day. It’s also nice to catch up and hear about each other’s days. Or it had been in the past.
One recent night during dinner, I asked B how his day was, per usual.
“Are you sure you want to know?” he asked, a look of skepticism on his face.
B: Well, I did an anal biopsy and then removed a piece of a colon. Then I had to shower and change clothes. It was a messy day.
M: Queasy smile. Appetite lost. Silence.
Lesson learned: How was your day? – is no longer dinner-appropriate conversation.
