Going the Distance

B is currently several hundred miles away doing his second urology Sub-I at a very well renowned hospital. It’s exciting for him to do an away rotation, to see how things operate at a different hospital, including things like different electronic charts systems, break rooms, language. He’s wrapping up his time there and I think it’s been a good experience. And hopefully it can help us down the road in the not-too-distant future. That said, he’s bummed about spending the month away from Mox and myself. And his accommodations leave much to be desired.

I tried to convince him that it was kind of like summer camp, but with less campfires and s’mores and more ORs and vending-machine dinners. Working essentially the hours of a resident, he doesn’t spend much time there anyway. So far his schedule has been almost every other day of surgery, then clinic, so he’s seeing a good mix.

Mox has found it to be very confusing .When B and I Skype, Moxe runs around the house woofing and looking for him. Every day when he gets home from daycare he looks around to try to find him. It’s a little bit heartbreaking, but he got to have a lot of fun at the dog beach last weekend with his best girl, Molly.

B and I spent 13 months in a long-distance relationship when I was in graduate school. It wasn’t fun, but we made it. It may make this month-long stretch seem insignificant, but we miss him and we’re glad he’ll be back soon!
